Reducing agent: In the presence of TMS chloride and either LiBr or NaI, aromatic aldehydes are reduced directly to benzyl halides: Tetrahedron Lett., 25, 1103 (1984). With a Pd(0) catalyst, acetylenes are reduced to olefins (mainly cis): Tetrahedron Lett., 30, 4675 (1989). Forms polymers via hydrosilylation of alkadienes and and alkynes. In the presence of a catalytic amount of titanium isopropoxide, secondary and tertiary phosphine oxides can be reduced to the corresponding phosphines in high yield, avoiding pyrophoric reagents: Synlett, 1545 (2007).
Applications
1,1,3,3-Tetramethyldisiloxane is used as a monomer in the production of silicone polymers or silicone resins. It is used as a precursor to prepare other organosilicon compounds. It is also utilized in non-aqueous polymer preparation as well as a laboratory reagent.
